What LX Factory is
LX Factory occupies a former 19th-century textile and printing complex under the 25 de Abril Bridge in Alcântara, reinvented since the early 2010s into a dense cluster of independent studios, concept shops, restaurants and street art. It's Lisbon's clearest example of industrial-to-creative reinvention, and a useful counterpoint to the historic centre's monasteries and castles.
What to do there
Ler Devagar. A cavernous bookshop built inside a former printing warehouse, with a giant bicycle sculpture suspended overhead — one of the most photographed interiors in the city and worth visiting even if you don't read Portuguese.
Street art and murals. The complex's walls double as a rotating open-air gallery; simply wandering the alleys between buildings is half the appeal.
Shops and studios. Independent designers, concept stores and small galleries fill the ground floors, with a rhythm that changes block to block.
Food and drink. A wide range of restaurants and cafés cover everything from casual to sit-down, plus a popular Sunday market when local vendors and food stalls take over much of the courtyard.
Rooftop bar. A bar on one of the complex's rooftops looks straight up at the underside of the 25 de Abril Bridge — a genuinely different Lisbon view from the postcard shots elsewhere.
Getting there
LX Factory sits in Alcântara, between the centre and Belém — reachable by tram, train (Alcântara-Mar station) or bus in about 15–20 minutes from Baixa. It works well as a stop on the way to or from Belém rather than a separate trip.
Best time to go
Weekday afternoons are noticeably quieter than weekends, when the Sunday market and rooftop bar both draw crowds. Either works — it depends whether you want energy or space to browse.
