5+ days in Lisbon: a menu, not a fixed plan

The full week version — city, Sintra, Cascais, and a fifth day split between a slower neighbourhood and a third day trip.

Updated August 2026 Written by the Awesome Lisbon team

Five days or more is where Lisbon stops being a checklist entirely and starts being an actual stay — the same four days as our 4-day itinerary, plus real room for Óbidos, Arrábida, a second look at neighbourhoods you rushed, or simply slower mornings. This is less a fixed plan than a menu — pick the days that match what you actually want more of.

Day 1: Historic centre & Alfama

  • Morning: Alfama and São Jorge Castle, early.
  • Afternoon: Miradouros down into Baixa, then Chiado and Bairro Alto.
  • Evening: Fado — see our fado guide.

Day 2: Belém & LX Factory

  • Morning: Jerónimos Monastery then Belém Tower.
  • Afternoon: LX Factory.
  • Evening: Sunset miradouro, dinner in Príncipe Real.

Day 3: Sintra day trip

Day 4: Cascais & the coast

  • Full day: Cascais — old town, marina and a beach afternoon. See our full Cascais guide.

Day 5: Pick one: Graça, Óbidos, or Arrábida

  • Slower city day: Graça and Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, the Feira da Ladra flea market (Tue/Sat), and any neighbourhood you rushed earlier in the trip.
  • Third day trip: Óbidos's medieval walls, reachable by a single direct bus and easily done as a half-day, leaving the afternoon free.
  • Coastal alternative: Arrábida & Setúbal if you have access to a car — the quietest, least touristy option of the three.

Day 6 and beyond

Once you're past five days, repeat the pattern above rather than reinventing it: alternate a slower city day (a neighbourhood, a museum, a long lunch) with a day trip. Lisbon and its surroundings comfortably support a week or more without repeating a single day trip — Sintra, Cascais, Óbidos and Arrábida are four genuinely different days out, before even counting Porto as a longer excursion.

Don't over-schedule the extra days

The single biggest mistake in longer Lisbon itineraries is treating every day like day one — book Jerónimos and Pena Palace ahead, then leave the rest of a 5+ day trip loose. Some of the best Lisbon days are the unplanned ones.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do with 5 or more days in Lisbon?
The same core plan as a 4-day trip (centre, Belém, Sintra, Cascais) plus a fifth day split between a slower neighbourhood day and a third day trip like Óbidos or Arrábida.
Is a week too long for Lisbon?
No — between the city's neighbourhoods and four genuinely different day trips (Sintra, Cascais, Óbidos, Arrábida), a week fills comfortably without repeating a day.
Should every day of a longer Lisbon trip be planned?
No — over-scheduling is the most common mistake on longer trips. Book the two or three sights that need timed tickets, then leave room for slower, unplanned days.
