3 days in Lisbon: the itinerary we'd actually recommend
Historic centre, Belém, and a day trip to Sintra — enough time to see Lisbon properly without rushing.
Three full days is the itinerary we'd actually recommend if you're asking: one day for the historic centre, one for Belém, and one to either slow down or take a day trip. It's enough to see Lisbon properly without feeling like a checklist.
Day 1: Historic centre & Alfama
- Morning: Alfama and São Jorge Castle — go early, before both the heat and the crowds build.
- Afternoon: Down through the miradouros into Baixa for lunch, then up to Chiado and Bairro Alto for the afternoon.
- Evening: Fado in Alfama or Bairro Alto — see our fado guide for how to find a genuine one.
Day 2: Belém & LX Factory
- Morning: Jerónimos Monastery (book ahead) then Belém Tower, taken slowly rather than rushed.
- Midday: Pastel de nata and lunch by the river.
- Afternoon: LX Factory for shops, street art and a coffee break.
- Evening: Sunset at a miradouro, then dinner in Príncipe Real.
Day 3: Sintra day trip (or a slower city day)
- Full day: Train from Rossio to Sintra — see our full Sintra guide for which palaces to prioritise.
- Prefer to stay in the city instead? Swap this for a slower day: the beach at Carcavelos, the Feira da Ladra flea market (Tue/Sat), or simply revisiting a neighbourhood at a pace the first two days didn't allow.
Book these two before you land
Jerónimos Monastery and Pena Palace (if you're doing Sintra) both sell out morning slots in high season. Everything else on this itinerary can be decided day-of.
Frequently asked questions
- Is 3 days enough for Lisbon?
- Yes — it's the itinerary we'd recommend for a first visit: one day for the historic centre, one for Belém, and one for a Sintra day trip or a slower pace.
- Should day 3 be Sintra or more of Lisbon?
- Sintra if you want to see its palaces at all — it doesn't fit comfortably into a 2-day trip. If you've already done Sintra before, use day 3 to slow down instead.
- What's the best order to see Lisbon's neighbourhoods in?
- Alfama and the castle first (steepest, best done with morning energy), Belém second, then whatever day 3 becomes — this order also spreads the hill-climbing across two days rather than one.
